TODAY'S FOOTBALL ....
UEFA Cup dominates the proceedings today, perhaps too many matches and the bookmakers are so wary of this competition, that the odds are changing minute by minute.
Blog is going well this week, 6 of the 8 selections have won, although no doubt someone will complain about one of the losers, as they did last week, when only 8 of the first 11 had won !

ENGLAND CHAMPIONSHIP ...
WEST BROMWICH ALBION - STOKE CITY
Albion are in great form on paper, with a 100% home record , the latest of which was a 5-1 win over QPR on Sunday. However, they are now meeting a much stronger side, who have lost just once in 15 league starts and are very difficult to break down. Stoke did the double over WBA last season and will not, like QPR, be arriving with their tail betwen their legs. I expect this to be close and am happy to take such a well organised side with a decent handicap start.

I am sure that they will come good at some stage, but this Milan side has failed to impress, are creating little and look older with every game. Celtic are almost impossible to beat in a european game at home, only Barce have managed it in the last 6 years, some 19 matches. They have not conceded in 7 of those and in only 2 of the last 12. They will be without Vennegoor, but that might not be too much of a handicap, as his workrate is often poor, Nakamura is a doubt, but I am assured he will play.

Huge problems continue at Bournemouth, they are without 7-8 players this evening and will have at least 4 in the squad carrying injuries, that would not have been risked under normal circumstances.On saturday they were forced to name a 43yo coach as back up on the bench and in that loss to Carlisle, could have been 4-5 down at the break. Brighton have been a little short of striking options recently, but both starters returned on saturday and will strip fitter tonight.

WREXHAM - CHESTERFIELD
Hosts finally ending a dire run ( 6 straight losses) with a hard earned win over 10 man Lincoln at the weekend, but the Imps were on a similarly poor run, so the form line is not too good.
Chesterfield are an ambitious club at this level and have some resources available, options not avaiable to the Welsh club. The visitors lost their unbeaten away record at Notts County on saturday, but really dominated proceedings, Jack Lester, who is normally reliable, missed a number of clear chances, they and him will be keen to return to winning/scoring form this evening. Field have hit the woodwork 6 times this season and are due a little good fortune, their total of 40 attempts on goal, in their last two away starts, makes impressive reading. .

Patriots saved the day yesterday, their scoring is getting a bit wierd, if they had scored a touchdown instead of a field goal, that would have been their 4th ,38 point score in a row and an exact repeat of last year's 38-13 win, correct scores are not easy to get right in American Football, but New England make it easier !

MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL .....
CINCINNATI BENGALS - NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS
38 is the magic number here. That is exactly the score that New England have posted in each of their three wins this season and when these two met, on this same day last year ? That's right 38-13.
Running back Laurence Maroney had a huge game that day and under normal circumstances, he would be in for special attention this time round. But, NE have added a number of offensive options, the most potent of which is Randy Moss, already setting records after just 3 starts, with 22 receptions, 403 yards and 5 TD's. So the porous Bengals defense, ranked last against the pass last year and that has already given up 51 points to Cleveland, looks in for a very long evening.
Cincinnati also have a knack of shooting theirselves in the foot and snatching defeat from the jaws of victory.Just do not see them posting a big enough number, or having the ability to restrict the Patriot offensive.
Bengals are just 6 from 16 since that defeat in 2006, which totally shattered their confidence.

NFL WEEK 4 ....
I have four bets for today, unfortunately, as it has already passed the time that I promised to post these previews (!), so they will have to be brief.
BUFFALO BILLS - NEW YORK JETS
Bills are ranked last in both offense and defense, have lost their quarterback for today and six players for the entire season, dreadful luck. That is about as bad as it can get . Jets picked up last week with the return of QB and team leader, Chad Pennington and young coach Eric Mangini, who is set to be an all time great, looks sure to be able to come up with a game plan to defeat the beat up Bills, who are averaging just 8 points per game.

MINNESOTA VIKINGS - GREEN BAY PACKERS
Packers QB Brett Favre, needs just one touchdown pass, to become the all time leader in the NFL. He seems certain to get it against a Vikings team that cannot defend against the pass, which is what Green bay will be doing and always have.

Colts have an amazing record in September winning 17 from 19, including the last 11 and they have won 21 of the last 22 at home. Frightening prospect for the Broncos. However, Colts are happy to outscore the opposition and are conceding an average of 18 points per game. Denver have plenty of options on offence, it is just that we have not seem them yet in 2007. As they are fond of saying, the only team that can stop the Broncos scoring, is Denver, in other words, they shoot themselves in the foot. Think that we will see the real Denver tonight, at least when they have the ball and I am taking the team to go "over".

DALLAS COWBOYS - ST LOUIS RAMS
Dallas remain my Super Bowl selection and should win this easily enough, but will they cover an almost two touchdown handicap ? I think so. The Cowboys have so many options on offence it is unbelievable and their huge offensive line should totally dominate the Rams and allow them to run and pass the ball, almost at will, especially late in the game, when those big guys beating up on you, really begins to hurt.

However, this is the classiest outfit that they have met since that day and only PSV have stopped Twente from scoring at least 2 in every start, impressing all watchers.

MILESTONE POST !
This is my 2000th post on the blog, I would like to have put a winner in it, but as the three selections today obliged, we will have to settle for that !
That must be way over 500,000 words, probably a lot more, if you are not doing anything this evening, maybe you could count them ! I wonder if anybody, apart from me, has read them all.
Eleven of this week's 14 selections have won on the blog, making some nice returns, the email service has done very much better.
Of course I am biased, but some of the previews this week, sent to subscribers have been excellent, win or lose and most have won, all have been pretty much on the button.
I am going to continue to blog, but 80-90% of my output is going to be solely for subscribers, which is out of line from what I originally intended, but my hand has been forced .

Last but not least, we have to back Arbroath, who are playing well and are unbeaten in 5. They meet an East stirling team that started the season promisingly, but have just collapsed, conceding 13 goals in two and a half games and will be missing 5 players today . The away would have been 1.40 last season and the hosts seem to be returning to that level of performance.

Morecambe lost 5-0 in the cup at Sheffield United in midweek and they were left chasing shadows and doing a lot of work in the second half, looking exhausted leaving the pitch. That makes 9 goals they have conceded in 3 starts and only scored once in 5.

This match is being played in Angers, at a neutral venue. Monaco are without 4 squad members, but only Koller and Menez would probably have started and they have plenty of options. They have named a fairly attacking line up and only have one league game in the next 23 days, none at the weekend, so no need to give this anything less than 100% of their attention.
Nantes, on the other hand, are top of Ligue 2 and have a very important and difficult trip to Grenoble on Monday and played a tense away game just 3 days ago, they are bound to be a little weary and I am siding with the visitors, who will be looking for a morale boosting win after losing 3 league starts.

I know that we are only 4 rounds into Serie A, but of the 40 matches played, an incredible 50% have been draws and they have been spread around. Every team has at least one stalemate to their name, infact, only seven sides have one, all the rest, two or more. This is way ahead of stats for recent years, just 13 draws, 32.5% at the same stage last season. So what, I hear you cry !
Well, I would be very wary of backing anyone at short prices for the time being and there could be money to be made trading in running. Big favourites with a lead, like Milan against Parma last weekend, always trade very short ,too short, they are cheap lays , pay handsomely and you do not have to be right very often to make a profit. One winners (loser) pays for a lot of losers (winners) ! Keep this in mind.
GERMANY BUNDESLIGA .... BAYERN MUNICH - COTTBUS
Huge handicap to overcome, but I am still taking Bayern. They score for fun and Klose and Toni, are already battling for the Golden Boot. Bayern have scored 14 goals, in the 4 games that the two have started.

I am taking the "over" here, Wolfsburg have scored and conceded in every league start this season, with 87% producing 3+. Werder have been "over" in 5 from 6 and have also scored 2 or more, during the same sequence.
The visitors had a nice 4-1 win over Stuttgart at the weekend, with Diego, happy now with an extended contract, pulling the strings. They produced 21 attempts on goal against a normally solid defence and even had 19 in the Champions League defeat at Real Madrid last weekend.

MONDAY ROUND UP .....
Two of the three football selections on the blog won today, which ensured a decent profit. However, once again, subscribers did even better, they had two additional selections, only one won, but at very nice odds ......

NFL WEEK 3 ... NEW ORLEANS SAINTS - TENNESSEE TITANS
I am taking the Titans plus the points. There are in good shape , have won 7 from 9 and only lost narrowly 22-20 to the Super Bowl champions last week. Any team that can keep Peyton Manning and the Colts to just 22 points, will not be worried about a team that has managed just two touchdowns this season.
Saints had the number one ranked offense last year, but seem a long way off that level and they were riding a tidal wave of emotion then, think that they may be suffering a mental letdown and this year could be very tough. They are not a bad team by any means, but have given up a lot of points to the Bucs and Colts ( twice as many as the Titans) .
Titans have won the last 4 meetings , including the last three in the Superdome.

We have a number of football matches scattered across Europe today and I am probably going to cover two of them on the blog . As always that is a little dependent on how the market moves through the day. Will put the first of these online mid/late afternoon.

Of which, just five lost and with even a minimal amout of luck, 13/14 could/should have won ! Anybody viewing the Roma, Cagliari, Livorno and Chigaco games, will know what I mean.

KARLSRUHE - BAYERN MUNICH
Klose and Toni are both fit to play today, in the three matches they have started, Bayern have collected maximum points, with a 10-0 goal difference. Promoted hosts have started Bundesliga life well and could even pass their illustrious visitors with a win, that is not going to happen. They are without two starting defenders and there is a huge gulf in class, away win.

They are the only side capable of challenging the top 4 and the PSV coach was very impressed with them. NEC are in poor form, losing their last 3 without troubling the "scorer".

Hosts look the best side in Italy at the moment, I feel the signing of Ludovic Giuly was a masterstroke, he was never given enough game time in Barcelona. Totti is playing at the top of his game and Arsene Wenger has singled them out as potential Champions League winners this season.They have won all 4 starts without conceding.
Juve came down to earth with a 1-0 home loss to Udinese, but had enough chances to win that, however, they look a little slow in key positions and conceded a lot of chances in the previous lucky 3-2 win at Cagliari. Both Camoranesi and Zebina are missing today.

CAGLIARI- PALERMO
Island derby. Cagliari have had very much the upper hand in these meetings, but I have no doubt that Palermo are the stronger team. Both are missing key players and this is a game that neither can afford to lose. We can expect a cautious approach from both and a draw looks far and away the most likely outcome. Last season Cagliari lost their league opener, as this and then went on to draw 5 of the next 7, not an easy place to get a win and they rarely lose two in a row, a draw !

LIVORNO - INTER MILAN
Nightmare display from Inter in midweek, from which they will want to bounce back as quickly as possible. If they had to choose an away fixture, this would probably be it, Livorno have conceded 10 in 3 starts, look in turmoil and are missing vital midfielder Jose Vidigal. More options for Inter, who can call on the services of 4 players who return from suspension and they will have a far better balance, especially in defence.

ENGLISH PREMIERSHIP
BOLTON - TOTTENHAM
Both coaches Lee and Jol are under intense pressure and will be forced to seek the 3 points. Spurs are easily the better team, but until King returns to marshall the defence, they will remain vunerable at the back, this is a side that has kept just 3 clean sheets in 25 starts. At the other end of the pitch they have an array of attacking options, maybe too many and against this defence, Bolton will also fancy their chances. Feel that the visitors will probably win, but think the "over" is a standout bet.

DENMARK ... ESBJERG - MIDTYLLAND FC
Going for an upset here, visitors are top of the table, but that has been largely down to their home form, where they have a 100% record, they are far less potent on the road. Esbjerg are a strange side and are very leaky at the back, however, they have no problems scoring ( 22 in 9) and are also probably in a false position in the table. They have an amazing record in this fixture (9-1-0 ) with 8 of those wins coming by 2 or more goals. I have to take a chance on them at the big odds on offer.

I know, I know, Atletico at home are a very risky proposition, but I feel they will kick start their league campaign today. Jose Mourinho is being tipped for this job, which is sure to motivate the home coach this evening. Hugely ambitious club who have to start living up to the potential and hype, after spending 80m euros in the summer. They should have won at Murcia last week, but choose to sit back on their lead, surely they will be more ruthless today, against a well organised Racing side, but one missing several defenders.

ALMERIA - MALLORCA
Regular readers will know that I like this Mallorca team, who I feel will challenge for a UEFA Cup spot this season, unlucky not to be unbeaten, they had a good goal disallowed at home to Villarreal last week. They are excellent on the break and can be expected to pick up a lot of away points this season. Hosts are set to struggle this season and are missing the suspended Crusat.

They can take comfort from the h2h stats where they are 4-2-1 and I do not see the more motivated side losing.

Finally, PSG are still looking for their first home win and have been well supported to get it today, but I do not think it will be quite so straightforward. To my mind these are two of the better Ligue 1 teams and although Bordeaux played in Europe on Thursday, most of the key players started on the bench and were just given a nominal run out, so that should not have any affect at all. Feel that it could be another frustrating day in the capital and these two very tight teams might cancel each other out, a draw.

Island derby. Cagliari have had very much the upper hand in these meetings, but I have no doubt that Palermo are the stronger team. More options for Inter, who can call on the services of 4 players who return from suspension and they will have a far better balance, especially in defence.

Both coaches Lee and Jol are under intense pressure and will be forced to seek the 3 points. At the other end of the pitch they have an array of attacking options, maybe too many and against this defence, Bolton will also fancy their chances. Feel that the visitors will probably win, but think the "over" is a standout bet.

They should have won at Murcia last week, but choose to sit back on their lead, surely they will be more ruthless today, against a well organised Racing side, but one missing several defenders.

Feel that it could be another frustrating day in the capital and these two very tight teams might cancel each other out, a draw.
