Just a few words about the second major of the year, which gets underway at Oakmont Country Club on Thursday. You can view the official site using this link.
This might well be the toughest set up, of any course in the history of golf and should be compulsive viewing for the sadists amongst you.
There is a 288 yard par 3, that some pros will not be able to reach with a driver ! There are only two par 5's, both over 600 yards, the 12th, an absolute monster at 667 yards.
Add to the mix, the fact that these are probably the fastest greens on tour and you get the idea. If there is no rain and the course dries out, scoring could become a joke.
The winning score at Winged Foot last year was +5 and it is universally accepted that Oakmont is tougher. Ian Poulter has already stated that he would take his chances with +5, Tiger Woods and defending champion Geoff Ogilvy both stated that this was the hardest they had seen.
BTW, Tiger and his wife are expecting their first baby, sometime in the next 2-4 weeks, no one, well I guess they are, is quite sure exactly when. Some things are more important than sport and golf is probably not a priority for him at the moment.
Vijay Singh played 3 practice rounds recently in fairly benign conditions and his best score was +3.
Should be fun !
I will be looking into the event in more detail tomorrow and on a daily basis thereafter. Back later.
