I know that Ernie Els and his management team cannot control the weather and would not have allowed for the Hilton Head tournament, going into a 5th day and a Monday finish. BUT, the schedule they had agreed to was already incredibly gruelling, now it is downright ridiculous.
By the time Els had completed the formalities in South Carolina, it would have been 19.00 cet Monday, this is where it gets complicated. He then had to fly to Shanghai, which must be a 17 hour journey, if flying direct, with what looks like a 12 hour time difference. So, with luck and no customs problems, he will arrive in the early hours of Wednesday morning, with a tournament tee off the following day !
BMW must be paying him incredible appearance money !
Ernie won this in 2005 by a massive 13 strokes, but he was already acclimatised to conditions, having played in Beijing the previous week.
We have to take him on, in a 72 hole tournament match bet with Retief Goosen, who did us a favour with his second place finish in Augusta. He took last week off and will certainly be the fresher and better prepared of the two.
These old friends have played in the same event 7 times in 2007, with our selection holding a 4-2 advantage, one tie. Think that this will be number 5, on a course that should suit him very well, in a country where he is already a two time winner.
4.5 points Goosen to beat Els tournament match bet 1.91 Sunderlands. lost - 4.5 pts
Good Luck.
