One round to go and the leaderboard looks like this .....
-10 Luke Donald
- 9 Scott Veplank
-8 Michael Allen
-6 Ian Poulter
-5 a group of 5 players including Singh and Mickelson
In one of my very early posts, I discussed the importance of following players in the final round, with a proven record in the pressure cooker atmosphere, that the back 9 holes can produce. You can read that article here......
With that in mind, looking at the top 4 on the leaderboard here, makes very interesting reading.
Donald is 24th for final round scoring in 2007, was 10th last year, with a 2 year average of 70.19. Verplank 122nd, 88th and 71.67. Allen 173rd, 113th and 72.19. Poulter 36th , 49th and 70.82.
Therefore we can reasonable expect Donald to better Verplank's score by 1.5 strokes and Allen by a full two shots. Infact, he is 4 strokes per round better than Allen, in 2007 alone.
The other Englishman, Ian Poulter matches up better, trailing only by a little over half a shot per round, but he has 4 strokes to make up anyway.
Given the fact that he is already coming in with a lead and with his nearest competitors clearly struggling when in contention, we can back Donald with a little confidence. Blog sponsors Sunderlands have clearly done their homework and are 1.83 for him to win, but there is plenty on Betfair at a big looking 2.12 and I feel we have to get involved.
4.5 points Donald to win outright 2.12 Betfair. lost by one stroke -4.5 pts
