Another round ........

...... of friendly internationals today and I fancy three of them to end all square. At this stage most teams want to field what is their starting eleven, but are terrified of injuries. Under these circumstances, you could make a case for the draw being favourite, yet in many cases it is still the outsider of three possibilities.

There have been over 40% draws in the huge amount of international fixtures during the past month. This is, I believe, in line with the stats for friendly matches over the past couple of seasons. Therefore, there is plenty of value around when the average game is priced around 3.25 or 30.77 %, very few are ever under 3.00 or 33.3%.

In Geneva, Switzerland face Italy, the Swiss are difficult to beat now days and are building a team to compete in Euro 2008. They drew 6 of their 10 qualification games and won the other four. Italy hardly ever extend theirselves in uncompetitive fixtures, a draw for me.

Slovenia play host to Trinidad and Tobago and are missing several players, they start with what is almost a "b" defence. Both teams have had training curtailed this week due to poor weather, T& T were unlucky to lose to Wales and will want to take something from this game. They play Czech Republic at the weekend and will be loath to go to Germany on the back of three defeats.
So an honourable draw will suit all involved.

Saudi Arabia meet Turkey in Offenbach, Germany, where, of course, there will be a huge turkish contingent. In 2006 Turkey have played 5 friendlies, all have been draws, infact, all have been score draws. Coach Fatih Terim, said winning is not important in these games, he is experimenting with a formation which is basically 2-2-2-2-2 (!) and feels everone else will follow suit. We will see, anyway, another draw is certainly possible.

2 points Saudi-Turkey draw 3.50 general
3 points Switzerland-Italy draw 3.10 general
2.5 points Slovenia-Trinidad and Tobago draw 3.25 general
all 3 3 x 1/2 point doubles 1x 1/2 point treble
1/2 point 2-2 draw Saudi-Turkey 15.0 general

If you shop around you may find higher odds.

Good Luck.

FIFA sit on the fence ...........once again

Today, Iran host Bosnia and Herzegovina in their holiest city, Mashhad.

B&H played in Seoul earlier this week, were outplayed by the South Koreans and admitted to suffering from jet lag. Well, another 2,000 mile journey will not have helped, Iran came within seconds of defeating Croatia on sunday, losing to a last minute penalty. They would love to win this final warm up game before heading for Germany. Mahdavikia and Zandi are nursing injuries and will not be risked, but they should still be too strong.

No doubt the 35,000 capacity stadium will be full but it will be a male only enviroment, women are not allowed to watch football matches in Iran. This is something FIFA should have got involved in, with a World Cup place at risk, they could have put enormous pressure on Iran to amend this law. I have copied the following two items fom LAST KICK Iran .........

In March, a group of about 40 Iranian women tried to enter the stadium for a World Cup warm-up match with Costa Rica. Authorities at first blocked them and then promised to allow them into to a reserved section. Instead, however, the women were put on a bus and driven around the city until the match ended.

TEHRAN, Iran - Like others who come watch Iran's national soccer team prepare for the World Cup in July, they join in the chants and wave their flags. But these fans are cheering from outside the fence surrounding the field, barred by law from entering because they are women. On Monday, more than 50 female soccer fans - from girls to mothers with baby strollers - pressed against the wobbling chain-link fence, screaming, whistling, and trying to make sense of their exile.
"We're out here like beggars in our own country trying to support our own nation's team," said 20-year-old Mina Tehrani, who was taking photos of the team with her cell phone. "Are we not Iranians? Are our cheers less important?"
It's just the latest in the ever-shifting - and seemingly arbitrary - messages sent to women by Iran's Islamic establishment.
Women work side by side men in nearly every setting, from state offices to passport control booths to parliament. In recent years, women have made headlines by taking places in police and fire departments. A few women cabbies cruise the streets of Tehran.
But it appears a firm line is drawn around the soccer field.
In April, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad surprised his conservative backers by deciding that women could attend soccer games, but restricted them to a separate section of the stadium. Ahmadinejad - an ardent soccer fan who once donned a jersey and kicked some balls with the national team - said the women's presence would "improve soccer-watching manners and promote a healthy atmosphere."
But Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, didn't agree. He has the final say on all matters in Iran, and his view on this one held: No women in the stands, even in a segregated section.
So Hamid Ghomnam leans against the fence with his two daughters, 10 and 12, and watches the team run through its drills. A security officer tried to hustle away the women - along with their husbands, boyfriends and fathers - claiming even the parking lot side of the fence is off limits. But the crowd stood firm.
Fingers clenched around the rusting fence, which bulged and swayed under their weight.
"I am ashamed to have my daughters out here in the parking lot looking in," said Ghomnam, 49. "But it makes me proud to show them women standing up against this very stupid rule."
A short way down the fence, Sima Babri called a friend to give a full description of the training. A Winnie the Pooh bauble dangled from her cell phone. She wore the springtime uniform of trendy, 20-something women across Tehran: denim jeans rolled high up on a calf, a form-fitting cotton tunic and a colorful headscarf that covered less hair than was blowing free.
"I'm here because I love the team," said Babri, 21. "But I'm also making a personal stand. We cannot just always back down."

There is a petition, link below, to protest this ridiculous rule.

England roll out the big guns ........

Sven has the Italian/ Swedish attitude to friendlies, they are warm up games and the result is unimportant, the English find this hard to comprehend. However, for the visit of Hungary to Old Trafford today he seems likely to start with his best (fit) eleven.

Looks like Owen will play alone up front, with maybe Gerrard as support. Cole and Lampard should be able to get forward, almost at will, against weak opponents, their star player, Zoltan Gera will be plying his trade in the Championship next season, unless his agent gets busy.

England should win comfortably, if not, the tabloids will be busy tomorrow.

Chile will be weakened following the expulsion of Navia and superstar, Gonzales, from the squad.
Infact, few of the team that impressed against the Irish are likely to play. More than half of the Ivory Coast squad play their club football in France, so will feel at home in Lorraine.

I really like the African team and will put my World Cup preview of them online shortly .

All to play for in Portugal ......

Final matches in Group B of the U21 European Championship in Portugal tonight.

Everything is still to play for, all 4 teams can still qualify, infact, all can still determine their own destiny. Netherlands and Denmark must win to advance, a point would suffice for both Italy and Ukraine.

In Agueda, Denmark meet Ukraine and will fancy their chances as they beat them home and away, in qualification for the finals. The Danes have impressed so far despite being winless. They dominated the opening fixture with Italy for long periods, taking a 3-1 lead before being held 3-3 , with a last minute goal from the Azzurrini.

Ukraine have a few problems, Ischenko,Yatsenko and Maksymov are all struggling with injuries. Three of the team are also set to join the first squad in Germany after this tournament and it is only natural for them to have this on their mind.

I take the Danes to win this.

The Netherlands have had a disappointing tournament so far, but have promised to attack from the start tonight. This may leave them vunerable on the counter and while Italy qualify with a draw, victory will leave them as group winners and mean they will avoid the very impressive French side in the semi-finals. Italy are looking for their sixth tournament win in the last eight championships.

Fedex St Jude Classic golf .......

The leaderboard is full of players that fall into the, yet to win, can't win or don't want to win category. Tin Herron did earn the winners cheque last week, but did his best to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, it may be asking too much for him to win again.

I like Ryan Palmer, he has scored all three rounds in the 60's this week and is hitting the ball a long way and putting well. He can be very streaky and has two 62's on tour to his name, would not need to shoot that low to win today. In contention, he has a strong record and shot a very pleasing closing round 68 last week, something similar would see him go close.

BMW Golf ........

Final round at Wentworth today, the front two, Howell and Jiminez, have got away from the field and bookmakers are betting "without" the pair.

Padraig Harrington is my choice, the irishman has never really been in love with this course, but shot a very nice 68 yesterday, in terrible conditions. In his post round interview he claimed to be playing his best golf ever and was waiting for the scores to reflect this. With the Ryder Cup taking place in Ireland, he wants to secure his place asap and is determined not to rely on a "captains pick". Expect him to put in a charge today and to win in the coming weeks.

Last round in Regionalliga.......

Munchen 1860 Am let us down last week but feel we should give them one more chance. They travel to Koblenz who have little to play for and nothing less than 3 points will do. They have been backed to do so with many companies, but Bet 365 still quote 2.375 and that is a stand out price.

I also like three games to finish "over" for the reasons outlined in the Regionalliga post last weekend. Likewise the Denmark-Paraguay match seems likely to produce goals, the south americans are taking these warm up games very easy. They will probably only start with four regulars and are sure to experiment, fully expect both teams to score at least once, therefore find plenty of value in the over 2.25 goals.

Belgrade has it all .......

Serbia and Montenegro play their final warm up game before the World Cup starts in Belgrade today and everything is in their favour.

The weather is hot and sunny (30 degrees), they have a full strength squad and will probably start with the 11 that will face the Netherlands on June 11. The stadium will have a 40,000 + crowd, to create a party atmosphere and say goodbye to their heroes.

Opponents, Uruguay, are also playing their part, 13 regulars have been "rested" and they are coming with a "b" team. To make matters worse, or better, many of these played in the match v Romania on Tuesday night in Los Angeles and two days earlier against Northern Ireland in New York! That is some 14,ooo+ air miles and goodness knows how many time zones.

Very strong home selection for me.

World Cup Preview ..... part 1

There is going to be so much written about the World Cup that I have decided to concentrate on one team in each group. This may not be my idea of the group winner, but if not, will be one that I consider to be overpriced, under rated and capable of causing an upset.

Going to start in Group C with the Ivory Coast, they qualified from a tough section containing african giants Cameroon and Egypt. In a free scoring group, they kept six clean sheets and managed to win in Cairo, a feat made all the more impressive by Egypt's 17 goals in the other 4 home ties. They came close to repeating the feat in the Cup of Nations final earlier this year, losing in a penalty shoot out.

I was really impressed with them in the Cup of Nations, their team spirit was amazing and Didier Drogba showed true leadership qualities, a whole new side to his game. Les Elephants beat Cameroon and Nigeria on the way to the final, their only reverse coming in the group stage, after qualification was already earned. They are a very proud team, proud of being african, proud of being ivorian and will fight to the end.

All but one of the squad are based in Europe, Drogba, Kolo Toure and Eboue in the Premiership and more than half play in France. Guy Demel, the only german based player, plies his trade in Hamburg where the Ivory Coast start their campaign against Argentina.

They are a squad of immense talent and presence and are strong in every position. It is likely that eight of the first choice eleven will compete in the Champions League next year. Zokora ( St.Etienne) and Yaya Toure (Olympiakos), Kolo's brother, are being stalked by every big club in Europe, they may also find their way to the Premiership before too long.

In World Cup qualification, strike partners Drogba and Dindane scored 15 goals between them. Before moving to Lens, Dindane scored 50 goals in 132 appearances in Belgium, where he was voted player of the year in 2003. The fact that he was forced to withdraw from the Cup of Nations makes their achievement, even more admirable.

Although they have plenty of experience at the top level, this is a very young team, average age of the outfield players is under 24 and they are growing together, as a team. Many of them have played together for a decade, having graduated from the Guillou academy in Abidjan.

Coach, frenchman Henri Michel, is vastly experienced and this will be his 4th World Cup, having previously led France, Cameroon and Morocco in the finals.

It is not just in Africa that they have impressed, following recent matches against Switzerland and Spain, both opposition coaches were inspired to quote .....

Swiss coach Kobi Kuhn had words of praise for his opponents.
"Ivory Coast are definitely the best team in Africa," "They showed they are very strong," added the coach who is revered in Switzerland after steering the country to its first World Cup for twelve years.

Spanish chief Luis Aragones offered...
"People will have enjoyed a game against a very good side" "It was difficult because physically they are very strong".

I accept that they are in an extremely difficult group but feel that their physical style will match up well with Argentina, in particular. Should they get off to a good start, they could have a very strong tournament indeed. At around 3.50 (betfair) ,to qualify from the "group of death", Ivory Coast are a value selection.

Do not want to refer to them as the tournament dark horse, as I feel they are much better than that, but at 100-1 what else can we call them, so , the tournament dark horse or elephant it is then.

Squad

Goalkeepers: Jean-Jacques Tizie (Esperance Tunis, Tunisia), Boubacar Barry Copa (KSK Beveren, Belgium), Gerard Gnanhouan (Montpellier, France)

Defenders: Cyrille Domoraud (Creteil, France), Blaise Kouassi (ES Troyes, France), Abdoulaye Meite (Marseille, France), Etienne Arthur Boka (Strasbourg, France), Kolo Toure (Arsenal, England), Emmanuel Eboue (Arsenal, England), Marc Zoro (FC Messina, Italy)

Midfielders: Didier Zokora (St Etienne, France), Emerse Fae (Nantes, France), Kanga Gauthier Akale (Auxerre, France), Romaric Ndri Koffi (Le Mans, France), Gnegneri Yaya Toure (Olympiakos,Greece), Gilles Yapi Yapo (Young Boys, Switzerland), Guy Roland Demel (Hamburg, Germany)

The warm up games just keep coming ......

Not a good day yesterday, so not going to get too involved today, have some ideas but will keep stakes to a minimum. Plenty of matches over the weekend, so no rush.

I am writing some World Cup previews today, may put something up later, so this will be short.

Like "overs" in the Turkey-Ghana and Denmark U21- Netherlands U21 games, both should be open, entertaining affairs. Turkey are really going for it at the moment, with an extremely offensive formation, they fought out a 3-3 draw with Belgium earlier in the week and I think both teams will score. If you wanted a speculative bet, a 2-2 draw, at around 15.0, may go close.

Veikkausliiga .........

Finnish league takes centre stage today, at least for betting purposes. Going to stick with Mypa to get a result at Turku, they have now won 3 straight, after an indifferent start and having got in touch with the leaders, will not want to lose ground today. They have a wonderful record here, 5 wins and a draw in last seven meetings and I expect them to add to that. Only negative is the state of the pitch, which is poor and may restrict their normal passing game but you can't have everything.

Rushing through this, very short of time today, U21 European Championship continues , I strongly advise the home nation , Portugal to get back on track against the soon to be divided Serbia and Montenegro, now we know why they kept the" and ".

The France- Germany game is sure to be tight and a draw will leave both sides fate in their own hands, this is what I fully expect, when the germans need a draw, they normally get it.

UK headline writers must be salivating ...........

...... at the prospect of Mark Gonzales finally starting for Liverpool. He looked a true superstar last night, that would grace the premiership and yes, he is VERY fast.

Surely this work permit farce will now be sorted out, in August, Rafael Benitez said that he was "the best player in Chile" and "better than 50% of the premiership". Well, the first statement may be true, the figure on the second should be revised to 99%.

Just how many variations on the "Speedy Gonzales " theme, the spread market makers and tabloid headline writers come up with, are probably endless.

Chile were a class above Ireland and really up for this game. If there are 5 or 6 better teams in South America ( unlikely), then everyone else is in trouble in Germany. I will be coming back to this in the next week or so.

I will post some information about today's matches later, please check back.

Hungary for Chile or Turkey ...........

OK , I know, scratching around for a headline and that was the best I could come up with.

Three solid bets today, first up is Hungary, recent results have not been good, but they have named a strong squad to face New Zealand, who have endured a 45 hour (!) journey, just to get here. Coach admits the players are tired and that jet lag will be a big problem, they are playing 4 matches on a european tour, the last of which is against Brasil and that will be the game they will try to peak for.

The great distances they have to travel make life very difficult, having played only 2 home games in almost 4 years, it's a long way to go for a friendly. New Zealand are 118 on FIFA world rankings, alongside India and Barbados and below such footballing giants as, Palestine and Hong Kong. Looks like everything is in favour of Hungary, ranked over 40 places higher.

I really like the "over" option in the Belgium- Turkey match taking place in Genk, where there is a large Turkish population, so support will be "hot", as usual. The visitors have named an attacking formation, both teams have had trouble keeping a clean sheet and two years ago this fixture produced 5 goals. A similar result could be on the cards tonight.

Finally, Republic of Ireland have named a very strong squad for the visit of Chile. This will be the final game of the season for the Irish and coach, Steve Staunton, will be looking to build on the recent 3-0 demolition of Sweden, before the build up to Euro 2008 begins in earnest. Very impressive at home, only Italy have won in Ireland in last 3 years and that includes visits by, Brasil, CzechRepublic,Croatia and Sweden.

Chile are ranked some 33 places lower by FIFA and are poor travellers, boasting only two draws and six defeats in last eight away ties. They have played only two, low key, "b" friendlies with New Zealand since October and arrive with a VERY inexperienced squad, only a handful have made 5 or more appearances for their country. A home win for me.

Odds tumble on friendly match .......

This will be a short post as the value will not last long.

Croatia travel the short distance to Austria for a friendly tonight. It is a long time since the home side have showed any form at all, losing 2-0 at home to Canada back in March. They have named six debutants in their squad and at least three are expected to start.

The visitors qualified in style for the World Cup and will have the majority of support in the stadium, many croatians live in Austria and this fixture has more interest for them than the natives.

Austrian bookmakers originally priced a Croatia win at around 2.20 but this disappeared overnight and they are "odds on " across the board. Feel sure the other european oddsmakers will follow suit later this morning and suggest we get on now.

I also like the Serbia and Montenegro U21 team to avoid defeat against Germany in the opening match of the European Championship in Portugal. They have included a couple of players who will be going to the World Cup. Just hope that they are not affected by the referendum, I have reduced my stakes a little just in case.

"From Finland to Toulon" ............

........the search for winners goes on.

I think the China U20 team in the Toulon tournament, continues to be under rated by the bookmakers and feel they are good value, especially on the asian line. In a competition where goals have been at a premium, this match could well go beyond the normal 80 minutes.

However, best bet today is in more northerly climes. 2005 Finnish champions Mypa got off to a
slow start this season, but a win today will leave them in 3rd place and within 3 points of the leaders. Opponents Kups have only scored one goal this season and not at all in the last three matches, they reached a new low, last thursday, losing 5-0 at home. They can hardly relish the prospect of a trip to Mypa where they have a horrendous record, losing 7 straight without scoring, 6 of those defeats by 2 goals or more and with a total aggregate of 22-0 !
Heard that they also have some injury problems today but have been unable to confirm that yet, to be honest, that would just be a bonus and I have already decided to bet.Interwetten have 1.50 on the home win, you may find higher on the exchanges, but I prefer the bigger odds on the asian handicap.

4 points Mypa -1.25 asian line 2.04

System going well, please send more money .......

That is six winning weeks out of eight and over £4,800 profit to a £100 unit stake. I think we have been unlucky, several times we have been robbed of results that could have doubled these profits. To say nothing of the 500-1 winner, suggested but not tipped ! That is going to haunt me.

Anyway, profits are good but not the sole point of this blog, the main aim is to inform and improve as gamblers, not just you but me as well. I really think it helps to write things down and the discipline of doing so, is certainly beneficial.

I would ask you all to reread my previous article "Lies, damn lies and statistics" (04/05/06), to my mind, he said modestly, this is one of the most important pieces you will ever read about golf betting and will make you money long into the future.

Lumpy bet on the golf ......

"Lumpy",Tim Herron is joint leader of the Colonial after three rounds of play in Texas. He has a reputation as a poor front runner, but I think this is a little unfair and he does boast three wins on the tour.

Infact, his final round scoring matches up well with joint leader and playing partner, Rod Pampling. Tim has averaged 1.25 strokes lower for 4th round scoring than the aussie, last year Pampling's record was even worse, 162 out of 202.

Herron has the edge this week in driving accuracy and GIR, cannot really fathom why he has been made the outsider in 2 ball betting and we can try a little at the odds on offer.

Jacobson`s stats this week remain very impressive, #1 driving distance, #9 driving accuracy and #9 GIR, if he can hole a few putts today, he should go close. I certainly like him to win his 2 ball against another aussie, Nick O'Hern.

The US golf tour is really changing, in the top 13 heading into the final round, we have 5 austalians and 3 scandinavians, this would have been impossible only a couple of years ago.

The richest football match... ever ...........

Barcelona- Arsenal ? Manchester United-Real Madrid ? No, Watford-Leeds, it's true, the Championship playoff winners will earn a fortune. Share of next years tv money is worth £30m alone, add increased sponsorhip, gate receipts etc and the figure should be closer to £50m and that, for winning one football match. Think the money men at each club will be more nervous than the players.

I think the game will be very close, everone terrified of making a mistake and it could well go to extra time. Going to keep a fairly low profile but will have a small investment on the draw.

Penultimate round in Serie B today and some interesting fixtures. Ternana simply have to win, victory will give them a chance, they face Avellino in their last game, so 3 points today will leave destiny in their own hands. Home side Cremonese are already relegated and have named an attacking formation with 3 strikers.

Going to take a couple of matches to finish "over" also, like most leagues there have been more goals in Serie B recently as the season reaches its conclusion. Main bet will be on the Albinoleffe-Crotone game, rumours abound that the visitors cannot afford promotion (!), they also come with an offensive formation 3-4-3 and as Leffe need something from the match, it could really open up.

I like a draw in the Castellon-Gimnastic game in Spain Segunda, it is a result which really suits both teams and they have a history of draws in this fixture, in a league which is very tight and with few goals.

Germany Regionalliga ......

Not too many matches today and we have to look winners in the most unlikely places.

1860 Am need a win to avoid relegation and they have enlisted several players from the A team, who play in Bundesliga 2 and are seasoned relegation fighters. Opponents Elversburg are in mid table safety and looking forward to their vacation.

Likewise Hamburger Am, a win at relegated Koln will go a long way to ensuring their status in Regionalliga for next year.

I have also included two matches where I like the "overs", penultimate round today, so last home game for some, nothing to play for in these fixtures and the Germans like to entertain the fans under these circumstances.

Last word on the Bilbao-Barcelona game ......

Barcelona are coming with a squad devoid of any player taking part in the World cup (fifa rule) and containing a mix of first/b/c team players.

Eto'o is liable to play some part, as it appears he needs one goal to finish the season as La Liga top scorer. I say appear as there seems to be some doubt whether he actually has 25 or 26 goals, pretty sure he is tied with David Villa. Think Eto'o will be given the chance to win yet another award.

Bilbao sold out the stadium several days ago, they have named the strongest squad available (Yeste gone for surgery) and surely they would like to beat the national and european champions. They feel they owe the supporters a win for the poor performance this year in La Liga. There is also a little bad feeling from the reverse fixture, players got a little heated and Barce fans spent much of the game taunting the Basque club that they were going to "segunda" (relegation).

Still think Bilbao are the more motivated team and I am happy with the original selection, however, I am going to add a small bet on "overs" as Eto'o may get the goal he needs. The 3-2 scoreline is priced around 30 on betfair and is not a forlorn hope.

This is truly amazing .........

Following on from my friday morning blog, the football bets showed a nice profit.

Fredrik Jacobson shot an eight under par 62 in round 2, to move up from 67th to 8th place and within 3 shots of the lead. He won his 3 ball by a full 5 strokes and for anyone who took the
550-1 on Betfair, he is now down to 37-1. You will probably be able to trade out at around 50, netting a 500 point profit. Thats £50,000 for a £100 investment, in a few hours !

Daniel Negreanu should have got involved, a £1000 bet would have got him straight,as
Kid Poker is now $725,000 down in the High Stakes Poker game.

Good Luck.

Great moments in sport ...........

Great moments in sport, we have a new entry, straight into the top ten, Freddy Deeb on High Stakes Poker when he realises he is being accused of "going south" (removing chips from the table), following a cigarette break.

His face, as it slowly dawns on him what the other players are saying, is a picture. It is Jimmy Conway (de niro) in Goodfellas contemplating what has been said and what must be done. I am sure it was filmed in slow motion.

Deeb was innocent, the tv tapes proved that, hope Chan, Farha,Sheikan and Negreanu felt suitably ashamed. What is it with Sheikan he rubs EVERYONE up the wrong way.

This is THE poker show, the one I have been waiting for. Top players, playing for their own money, $100k minimum buy in and the real drama has little to do with the cards. These guys are grumpy, annoying, hilarious, intimidating and capable of tilting, infact, just like the rest of us.

Negreanu was seriously tilting, following some bad beats, ok to be fair he was stuck the best part of $500k (yes,it's true) and that would throw anyone off their game, but he was making some VERY loose calls.

Fantastic viewing, soap opera for poker players, I am hooked.

Strangely drawn to Toulon ............

There have been very few goals in the U20 international tournament in Toulon, shown live on Eurosport.

Today China and Portugal meet and both will qualify from the group stage with a draw. That is what I think the result will be but will cover a little on a chinese victory. Their coach said they suffered from jet lag during their opening fixture and that they would improve.
This they did, with a 2-0 win over well fancied Argentina. Having done the hard part, I expect them to complete the job today.

I have found two teams in French div 3 tonight that are very motivated and face opponents with nothing to play for. So all the football action today takes place in France. However, on the other side of a much bigger pond, I would like to talk a little about a swedish golfer on the US tour.

Fredrik Jacobson is a flamboyant, very talented golfer yet to win on the tour, he does boast a 3rd place finish,a 5th place in the 2003 US Open and $4m in prize money. Makes you wonder why anyone would want to play in America !

Freddie should have won by now, the problem has been his sometimes erratic driving. I think he has addressed this , of course, sods law says that his previously good putting has now gone off a bit but soon he will synchronize both and then, watch out ! Think he will also be motivated by Edfors recent success in Europe, the swedish golfers seem very close, competitive, yet friendly.

He is currently playing in the Bank of America Colonial tournament, yesterday, in the first round his stats made very interesting reading. 1st for driving accuracy, 8th for driving distance and 13th for greens in reg (GIR), his round was let down by taking 31 putts. This is a man who just needs to sink a few, putts that is, not beers. Last year he hit a rich vein of form at around this time, 16th here with 4 rounds at or under 70, followed by a 6th and 17th place in the following two weeks.

I think Freddie will go close to winning shortly, maybe not this week, he is 7 strokes off the lead but you can get circa 550-1 on betfair, for anyone brave enough. He does need a good 2nd round to make the cut, so, if you see any odds I expect him to beat Frost and Azinger comfortably. Do watch out for Fredrik J over the coming weeks.

Just a quick note to say the Bilbao- Barcelona game has been moved to saturday, this does not really change my thoughts on the match. All bets stand and I will say a little more tomorrow.

Good Luck.

Party time in Barce ...........

I guess the best team won the Champions League, the game, as a spectacle, was ruined by the sending off, but still produced plenty of drama. Could have been a much different result if TH had taken his golden opportunity to put the gunners two up, five minutes later they were behind and the contest over.

The party went on late into the night/morning in Barcelona. There is a 5 hour + victory parade this afternoon, scheduled to finish after 10pm, when party #2 will no doubt start. Read that under FIFA rules no player competing in the World Cup will be allowed to play tomorrow. This,
coupled with the celebrations, mean we have to side with Bilbao. If you did not take the 2.44/ 2.38 yesterday, there is still some 2.25 around today, a little higher on the exchanges. This is still value and will not last, remain of the opinion that evens will be tops tomorrow.

A couple of small bets today ........

2 points CHELTENHAM-WYCOMBE over 2.5 goals 2.175 asian line

Get the money on early ......

...... this is hard to believe, but on Friday, less than 48 hours after a Champions League final, Barcelona have a league game.

It is the final La Liga fixture of the season and the Catalan side travel to play Bilbao. Too early for official news but what sort of team can Barce put out ? Surely tonight's squad will all be excused duty, should they win tonight it will be party time in Barcelona, the league game, with nothing at stake, will scarcely be given a thought.

Expect Bilbao would like to finish the season with a win over the league and maybe european champions, some big prices are currently quoted about a Basque victory.
Suggest we take what is available now, I doubt much above evens will be on offer come friday.

5 points Bilbao 2.44 betfair / 2.35 expekt

Good Luck.

The final europe wanted ........

.... ok, not if you are from Milan or Madrid maybe, but for neutrals, purists and football lovers worldwide, this is the dream final. Barcelona v Arsenal, Ronaldinho v Henry, the two best players in the world meet in the city of love, in spring. Romantic it may not be, thrilling, almost certainly.

Nothing much to say, pull up a chair, pour a cold one and enjoy.

I expect the match to be tight but cannot see both defences holding out for 90 minutes, over 1.75 goals on the asian line looks worth a small interest.

Check back shortly, I have a very good bet for later in the week.

It's all to play for in Spain

Three matches left in Spain, the only two competitive fixtures are tonight and what games they are.

Osasuna-Valencia and Seville- Real Madrid. Valencia and Madrid have qualified for the Champions League but are battling for the final automatic place. With the World Cup this summer, the few extra weeks rest will be vital and could have a big bearing on fitness come the end of next season. The two home teams are fighting for one last Champions League (qualifying ) place and the prestige and millions that can bring, the loser will play UEFA cup next year.

If Real win, the other match becomes a friendly, If Seville win, then Osasuna must win to qualify and Valencia will need a point to pass Madrid.

The team from the capital are unbeaten in 13, have had ten days rest and boast a good record in Seville, 5 wins and only one defeat in 8 starts. The Andalucian side have played two matches in 6 days, including a european final and a celebration which lasted until 4 am ! I favour Real.

Valencia are missing 8 potential starters, 5 of which have been in the squad recently. In a way they have less to play for than Osasuna, as it is worse, much worse, to finish 5th and be out ,than to be 3rd and have to play the qualifying round. Things could also be out of their own control ,so I am going to side with the Basque team.

Ten play off matches in England so far and not one home win. Lincoln will be buoyed by that statistic and will have to go forward to claw back the goal they trail by. This is also a local derby to add extra spice, hopefully we will see goals, the last three league games have produced 14.

Great Scott .......

OK the headline gives it away, I am going for Adam Scott to win the Byron Nelson Classic golf today. He goes into the final round tied with Trevor Immelman, one shot clear of Brett Wetterich and three clear of the "field".

I am sorry but Wetterich is not a good R4 player, his in contention record is poor and I just cannot see him as a winner. Immelman is a very talented golfer and is in contention for the second week in a row, however, I have a feeling that he played his best golf yesterday with a low score of the day, 66. It is hard to play at that level for two days in a row.

Adam went to pieces on the back nine saturday but hopefully he has got that out of his system. A proven front runner, his stats look very good, number one for driving distance and 4th for GIR this week, aside from 2-3 shots yesterday, he is at the top of his game.
For 2006 final round scoring he is averaging 69.6, thats a full stroke over Wetterich (70.8) and two over Immelman (71.67). I make him, at best, an even money chance to win, at 2.66 on Betfair he is must bet material.

5 points ADAM SCOTT outright 2.66 betfair

British Masters Golf ........

Final round of the British Masters takes place tomorrow and I think we have a very nice bet.

Stan James have put up prices without the front three of Casey, Campbell and Clarke. The main contenders are -9 Edfors, -9 Gallacher and
-8 Sandelin, the field are -6 or worse. My selection is Sandelin, his driving was very consistent in round 3, hitting 11/15 fairways, Gallacher only hit 5 and Edfors 2 ! Jarmo finished 2nd last week, following on from a recent top 10 finish, he is obviously at, or near the peak of his form.

At the generous place terms of 1/5 1234, he only has to finish top 7 for us to show a small profit, as he is already in 6th place and 2 strokes clear of 7th, this really looks terrific value.

I am also going to try a small outright bet on Campbell. Casey, as you know is a favourite of mine but not the greatest front runner in the world. MC is a major winner, finally showing a return to form, at a course he has gone close at in the past, he seems overpriced.

1.5 points win Campbell 4.00 ladbrokes
4 points each way Sandelin W/O the front 3 6.50 stan james 1/5 1234

Good Luck.

omg .......... thats all folks........

Finally, Gretna have had a wonderful run, from non league obscurity in front of 100 supporters, to two promotions, a cup final in front of 50,000 and a place in europe next season. It is a true fairytale for a club from a town with a population of 2,500, you could not make it up.

However, today they face Hearts, the second best team in Scotland and this is a big step up in class.Gretna like to attack, they play 3-5-2 and finished the season with a +67 goal difference !
Hearts are quick starters, leading at half time in 23 of their 27 victories this year and we can base our bets around this statistic.

In Serie B, Atalanta are already promoted and face Arezzo who need the points for a play off place, I select the team with the greater motivation.

3 points Hearts to lead HT/FT 2.00 Ladbrokes
1 point Hearts to win both halves 3.10 paddy power
1/2 point Hearts to score 4 or more 5.50 bet 365
3 points Arezzo +1/4 1.94 asian line

OMG ...........part 3

On to France, where it is also the final round today.

Metz are poor, they are relegated with only 5 wins all season. However, they are at home to PSG who are fielding a complete "b" team and following on from a 4-2 home defeat by Ajaccio last week, the team from the capital can hardly be feared. Odds of 2-1 may look huge by close of play tonight and must be considered value.

Marseille go to Bordeaux knowing that only a win will help their Champions League dreams, we can take a chance at the odds on offer.
Bordeaux may be without as many as 9 players, either rested or unavailable and have nothing to play for, sounds great doesn't it ? Only negative is that Marseille have not won in the wine centre for almost 30 years, still, everything must change.

For the reasons stated earlier I expect goals in the less competitive fixtures, French football is very low scoring in general but recent years have still seen goals increase as the season is winding down. A trend that has continued this year.

3.5 points Metz 3.00 general
3.5 points Marseille 2.60 general
2 points Lyon-Le Mans over 2.5 goals 1.92 asian line

OMG ...........part 2

Wow ! Two unbelievable fixtures in the Bundesliga today.

Wolfsburg-Kaiserslautern, loser is relegated, draw will be enough for the Wolves. Kaiser come into the fixture in better form and showing more fight, came close to beating champions Bayern last week. In a similar game two weeks ago Wolfsburg could have secured their future and lost 3-0 at home to Mainz. Not for the faint of heart, the visitors for me.

Hamburg-Werder Bremen, same scenario at the other end of the spectrum, winner has automatic entry to Champions League group stage and all the riches that brings. Loser must qualify, once again draw is enough for the home team.Let me make this clear, Bremen are without question the second best team in Germany regardless of the result today.
A goalkeeping error robbed them of a CL quarter-final place and they outplayed champions elect, Barcelona for long periods in an earlier group match.

They have rediscovered their scoring boots, scoring eleven goals in last two starts and boast a recent 3-0 victory over Bayern Munich. Hamburg are struggling and have only beaten relegated Cologne in last three matches. Going to strongly favour the visitors, especially on the asian line (level ball) where we have stakes refunded if the match is a draw, the result Hamburg are looking for.

Last round in Bundesliga ALWAYS produces goals, of course line makers know this too and we have to go "over 3", but I am confident that the two selections will.Last three starts of Nurnberg and Hertha have averaged exactly 5 goals, Hannover and Bayer have gone "over" 7/8 meetings.

5 points Bremen level ball 1.96 asian line
3 points Kaiserslautern 2.875 general
2.5 points over 3 goals Nurnberg-Hertha 1.82 asian line
2.5 points over 3 goals Hannover-Leverkusen 1.84 asian line

More to follow.

Good Luck.

OMG .......what a day !

Today threatens to be VERY expensive, I have sooooo much information and sooooo many ideas, it is hard to know where to start. Just going to plough through it in 2-3 blogs over the next couple of hours.

Firstly, not so happy about the golf, joint leader in the US is Adam Scott, noted as coming into form last week and in Europe, Paul Casey, flagged as a certain future winner recently, is three strokes clear at the half way stage. Both were available at 18-1 and I don't have a penny on !

Lets start in Spain for today`s selections. . Today, Alaves must beat neighbours Depotivo La Coruna to have any chance of avoiding relegation, I think they will do so. They also need unmotivated Sociedad to avoid defeat at Espanol, as an extra incentive the Alaves board have offered 30,000 euros per man to their Basque neighbours to get a result . This is common in Spain and not illegal, nothing wrong in offering another team money to win, to lose is another matter !

I expect the games where teams have nothing to play for today to produce goals.Clubs want to leave the fans with positive memories for the summer and the final round tends to produce open, attractive football , with plenty of goals. Taking two "overs" in Spain, my main selection being the fixure in Villareal, visitors Racing have gone "over" in 5 of last 6 and this fixture has averaged 5.25 goals over the last 4 seasons, all "over".

Division 1 playoffs .........

.......get underway today. I have seen all four teams play recently and it is fair to say that they are all in indifferent form. Maybe I caught them on a bad day but Huddersfield were very poor, their play was one dimensional and they were completely dominated by a Brentford team playing, for most of the match, with only 10 men.

Brentford are struggling with injuries and a small squad, along with Swansea they seem incapable of keeping a clean sheet at present. Both league meetings between these two finished 2-1 to the home team, over the season, both Swans home games and Bees away fixtures have averaged almost 3 goals per game. Think we can expect both teams to score and a 2-2 scoreline is not out of the question at a big price.

Barnsley have collected more points than the other three in the second half of the season and have been beaten only once at Oakwell in 23 starts, they will be boosted by the return of captain, Paul Reid.
Despite the 6,000 visiting Huddersfield supporters, I see a little value in the Tykes on the asian line where a draw will return half our stake.

Today's selections........

2 points AIK STOCKHOLM level ball 2.20 asian line
3 points SWANSEA-BRENTFORD over 2.5 goals 2.15 asian line

A game of two halves .......

These playoff games are a law unto theirselves. With the second leg coming so quickly after the first, you would expect results to be a little more predictable, however, time and time again I have seen a team down and out after the first tie, turn things around in the return.

Not saying that Palace will be heading to Cardiff at the end of the month, turning round a 3 goal deficit is probably beyond them, but feel that they will put on more of a show tonight. They have to go for it, Watford seem sure to sit back and Palace will have 3 strikers on for at least half of the game. If they can score first, who knows, once a team get nervous anything can happen.

I expect goals tonight, would not put anyone off taking Palace at the 3.20 available with Centrebet and the exchanges, but think I will take the "overs" on the asian market. This will be my only selection for today, the "over 2.5 " with Redbet and Betfair at circa 2.28 is also perfectly acceptable.

4 points WATFORD-PALACE over 2.25 goals 1.95 asian line

Monday morning blues ...........

I am fed up this morning.

My beloved Brentford F.C. have blown automatic promotion (only 12 points out of possible 33 in last 11 games ) and are once again heading into the playoffs, this is the 6th time and we are yet to win one ! Finding it hard to work up too much enthusiasm, the club, players and supporters seem shell shocked and worn out. Hope Martin Allen can work some magic before the trip to Wales. Maybe we can slip something into the Swansea players lunch time snacks . Red Army !

Last week was a bit of a struggle but we still managed to make a nice profit, thats 5 winning weeks out of six.

4th round scoring ......

Just a couple of lines to explain the golf selections.

Goosen is almost 3 strokes ahead of Furyk for final round scoring this year, starting today just one stroke behind, he looks the likely winner. Furyk looked a little fragile against Baddeley recently.

Adam Scott is almost a full stroke ahead of Micheel and nearly 2.5 ahead of Van Pelt, coming back to form, he looks massively overpriced.

Lucas Glover is a very steady final round scorer and has, on average almost 1.5 strokes in hand of his opponents today.

Lies,damn lies and statistics .......

Not sure if Mark Twain was a golfer, I suspect not, but golf is a game of statistics, total putts, greens in regulation, driving distance etc.

However, on the USPGA website, one stat stands head and shoulders above all others, at least for betting purposes, "scoring average final round".

When the pressure is on and the big bucks are on the line, who can hold their nerve and who will wilt under the strain. Time and time again the same players produce the goods and others disappoint.

Last week Stuart Appleby ran away with the Shell Houston Open, so much so, that by Sunday, bookies were quoting odds "without the favourite". The only leading contender with a proven R4 record was cash cow, Bob Estes. This man is a money earning machine, he earns $1-$2m EVERY year, yet his own mother would struggle to pick him out of a police line up.

In 2005 he was 14th for final day scoring and 11th in 2004, this on a tour consisting of some 200 of the best players in the world. You could virtually guarantee that he would play his usual game, whatever the course threw at him.

Starting just two shots behind the talented, but erratic, Mathias Gronberg and clear of the rest of the field, he was priced at 5/1 and duly obliged.

The final round 2 balls can be a real gold mine, sometimes pairings can match a player ranked top ten, against another ranked at 180. In real terms, this can be as much as a three stroke difference and a true guide as to how they are likely to perform.

Some of these rankings are as you might reasonably expect, Tiger and the ultra consistent Furyk, Toms and Singh almost always appear in the top 20. However, there are some real surprises, Bart Bryant has been top 10 for each of the last two years, Lucas Glover 14th and 17th and little known Taq Ridings, 2nd in 2004 and top 25 last year.

At the other end, Sergio Garcia has barely made the top 100 in either year and former Masters champion Mike Weir was 123rd in 2004 and 160th last year !

This is information to make money from.

Check back on a regular basis for final round betting advice.

Good Luck.
