GUINCAMP-BREST / ORGRYTE-IFK

So many derby games today, which is very strange for a Monday.

Was going to suggest taking Guincamp in the Brittany rivalry, where there is little love lost between the two sides and IFK in the big Gothenburg derby.

There is a lot of pressure on Brest coach Thierry Goudet, his side are without a win this season and will get no favours from the home side, who thumped Gueugnon 6-1 in their last outing at the Stade du Roudourou, a result which belies their lowly league position.

Orgryte and IFK are both desperate for the points, for very different reasons, a draw will not help the "visitors" (they share a stadium) much and they will be forced to push for the 3 points. They are the better side, have won the last 5 h2h and are 16-3-4 in the last 23 meetings.

However, Guincamp's odds are a little disappointing and any value in IFK has now gone, all the 1.90 having well and truly disappeared.

So I am going to pass and wait for tomorrow, just the two earlier bets for today.

Something of a derby tonight in Superettan ........

... when IFK Norrkoping host near neighbours Atvidaberg.

IFK will be keen to bounce back after a 2-0 loss to Falkenbergs, a defeat which ended their long unbeaten run. Anything less than 3 points will put an end to their promotion challenge, after working so hard to get back in contention, they will not give up without a fight.

AFF must surely be feeling the effects of a long season, an extended UEFA Cup run has left them playing twice most weeks. They have already conceded 7 goals in the last week and no team in the top 10 has conceded more. Tonight they are without key player and playmaker, Kristian Bergstrom, he along with Eirik Dybendal of IFK, leads the assists "table" and will be sorely missed.

With tired legs, a suspect defence and no one "pulling the strings", they will do well to avoid defeat at Idrottsparken, where IFK have lost just once in 15 starts.

I expect Oxford United to get back to winning ways tonight ......

..... after all, they have two former Brentford players in the team.

They travel to play Crawley Town who's problems have been well documented in the media and on this site. Actually they started the season quite well, but have now lost 4 of last 6 and were comprehensively beaten by fellow strugglers Southport, at the weekend.

Huge difference between the two sides, both on and off the pitch. Town have averaged crowds of under 1,000 this season, United will probably have that many travelling supporters tonight. Over 6,500 saw them draw 1-1 with Grays on Saturday, in a stadium that would be the envy of every other Conference club.

They have the set up and backing to really progress now and the potential to be a Championship side.Boss Jim Smith has a squad with plenty of league experience. They will be desperate to make up for the two points dropped at the weekend and will be looking to add to their 7-2-0 start to the season.

The "U's" will be boosted by the return of Rob Duffy and Chris Hargreaves, who will join fellow former Bee, Eddie Hutchinson in the starting 11. These are two players who will give you 100% and make sure that everyone else does too. In form striker Steve Basham, is looking for his 50th goal for Oxford and is very keen to get it tonight, in front of the SKY cameras.

Feel the whole side will want to impress and prove that their stay in the Conference, will be a brief one.

Terrible week !

It had to come, just like Christmas, it always does.

You have to learn to live with the downswings, that is the life of a gambler, but even after 22 years, it is still difficult.

The only thing to do is reduce the stakes a little, work a bit harder and wait for things to change.

How you handle the losing run, is as important as finding winners, you certainly learn more about yourself.

I strongly believe in positive thinking and do not want to write about bad luck/ results, nothing good ever happened to anyone thinking negative thoughts. A positive mental attitude is as important for a gambler, as it is for a sportsman.

When Tiger Woods is 3 shots behind with 2 holes to play, do you think it even enters his head, that he cannot win the tournament ? No way.

However,do not want anyone to think that I am "hiding", or that it doesn't hurt.Believe me, I am licking my wounds.

So, lets try to end on an up note, we have still won in 9 of the last 11 weeks and are showing VERY healthy profits.That is the aim of the blog, consistent long term profits and I am supremely confident that we will continue to achieve that.

I like three teams tonight Miami, Jets and Dallas.

Main selection is Dallas, loser of this clash with divisional rivals Washington, will face a mountain to climb to reach the playoffs. The Redskins pass defence looks very weak just now, they are really missing Shawn Springs. Running back Clinton Portis is also out.

If Drew Bledsoe gets his timing right and surely he cannot play as poorly again, they should comfortably cover the spread. As Washington played in the Monday night game, Dallas have had an extra day to prepare and that is always vital.

I appreciate that the home team are in excellent form, but I cannot believe the asian handicap quote of +1 goal for the visitors.

This is one of the most intense derbies, not just in Spain, but anywhere in Europe. It is 11 meetings and 6 years, since either won this fixture by 2 or more goals, infact ,8 of the last 15 have finished all square.

Without a midweek fixture, Betis have had all week to prepare for this tie, unlike Seville who had the distraction of a UEFA Cup trip to Greece.

In Serie A ......

I am interested in the "over" when Lazio host Palermo.

Last 4 h2h meetings have produced 20 goals at an average of 5.0 per game. The visitors opened with a 7 goal thriller and had a strength sapping win at West Ham just 3 days ago, they did a lot of chasing in that match and are sure to feel the effects, this early in the season.

Lazio are keen to put on a show today as Palermo took "their" UEFA cup spot, following the "match fixing scandal". They certainly warmed up nicely with a midweek friendly over a local amateur side, in which they scored 26 goals ! Both strikers scored six each and are nicely tuned up for today.

I think signing the two Argentine superstars, has disrupted the Hammers season and it may take a few more games for the team to gel around Tevez.

Javier Mascherano is another matter, he looks born to play in the Premiership and could walk into any team in the world.

I expect goals today, West Ham do not look 100% solid at the back and have scored and conceded in six straight domestic games.

CHELSEA-LIVERPOOL

Last month these two met in the Community Shield, at the Millenium Stadium, we took the "over" 2 goals and I suggest we try the same bet today.

Pool won that game 2-1, my argument was and remains, that we will see a more adventurous Chelsea this season. In the Premiership, I expect them to try and entertain, rather than killing games off.

With so much goalscoring threat on show, look at the two squads below, it is hard not to see a couple of goals today.

Marco Barrera has been a true champion and one of the greatest fighters of recent times. However, chancing a quick rematch with Rocky Juarez, may turn out to be one bout too many for the "Baby Faced Assasin".

Juarez is out for revenge, not just for the first fight, when he was awarded a draw, only for the result to be changed some 3 hours later, due to a "scoring error",but also for the Olympic gold medal he was robbed of, by a very controversial decision in 2000.

I have to oppose Reggina today .........

Following the 15 point deduction as punishment in the "match fixing scandal", they are fighting a losing battle to preserve their Serie A status.

They have lost their playmaker and two key defenders from last season, in the season opener they fought bravely to "only" lose 4-3 to Palermo, but were 3-0 down in no time and were being carved open at will.

Today they are without another defender, the suspended Aronica and two important players Amoruso and Mesto face late tests.

They host Cagliari, who were very disappointed to lose their first game against newcomers, Catania, after a very good pre season, which promised much, they will want to bounce back and could hardly have asked for a better fixture.

Brentford's problems continue to mount .....

Andy Frampton and Oli Skulason are still missing and now Andy Griffiths and top scorer, Jo Kuffour, face late tests.

Today they host Bournemouth who, despite having lost their management team, remain in good form and are unbeaten in 5.

Striker James Hayter, a 20 goals per season man, continues his goal scoring ways, although playing in a slightly deeper role this season. With the current injury situation, the Bees are going to have big problems containing him.

If Kuffour and Griffiths do not start, I just cannot see any way Brentford can win, the squad is not strong enough. Even if they do start, it will be a struggle, Frampton and Skulason are very important players .They look set to lose the midfield battle and are there for "the taking".

I just do not see how the price on Sunderland can hold up ........

The 1.70 on Sunderland defeating Leicester looks unlikely to last.

Roy Keane has turned them around in double quick time and they have now won 3 in a row. This is his first official home game and over 30,000 supporters are expected at the Stadium of Light to cheer them to victory.

Leicester have really disappointed,in a season which promised much and have only scored once in their last 4 starts.

We have done well in this market in France, this season and the basic reasoning has been explained in several earlier posts.

Two ambitious teams meet at the KC Stadium ......

.... tonight, when Hull City face Sheffield Wednesday live on SKY television.

Wednesday are a real sleeping giant, with massive support, spurred on by the success of city rivals, United, they will put in a challenge to return to the Premiership, sooner rather than later.

The Owls have had a terrible run of injuries over almost two seasons and currently have some 10 squad members missing. They really have problems scoring, only 4 in 7, but have a lot of fight and are very well organised by boss, Paul Sturrock, who has just extended his contract to 2010. Hard to beat, they have drawn 4 of 7 starts and only conceded 5 goals.

Hull City have come a long way in recent seasons, a new stadium, two promotions and a board ready to back new coach Phil Parkinson. Goals have also been a problem for City, just 5 for them. They have addressed the problem with the signing of Michael Bridges, a move which paid immediate dividends when he scored the winner at Leicester in midweek.

Former England defender Danny Mills joined the cause yesterday and goes straight into the side tonight.

I see a very tight game that neither can afford to lose, add to that the problems both have had scoring and the only possible conclusion is ,that there is a lot of value in the draw and that is my selection.

Word of praise for the Wednesday supporters, you hear a lot about so called "big" clubs, but they have had very little to cheer in recent years, yet always turn up in huge numbers. They took almost 2000 supporters to an away, pre season friendly, in July, against a Division 2 team, not many "big" clubs could compete with that.

Not going to suggest a bet, still too sore about the football results, but I cannot agree on the odds for Mike Weir to beat Paul Casey, find it very difficult to split the pair, at 2.22 with Betfair, the Canadian looks a value bet.

Casey played well yesterday, beating an out of sorts Gooesen, mainly due to a 9 hole run of 6 birdies and an eagle and was holing from everywhere.However, he is never sure to produce his "A" game two days in a row.

Weir had a more dogged victory over the inform Adam Scott, but only shot 2 more than Casey, the former Masters champion is very tough to beat when his putter gets hot.

I received some late, negative news about the team in question, so better to wait for another day.

The Premiership's club record in European football is, quite simply, awful. One win in 16 starts. They are still without a league win and have only mustered one goal in 4 matches, striker Jason Roberts is missing once again.

They travel to Austria and a meeting with the very ambitious Salzburg team, who boast an impressive home record. In addition to winning all 3 league games,they have also beaten FC Zurich and Valencia in Champions League qualification. In those 5 wins they have only conceded once.

After the start the Spanish side have made to their season, we now know how good the win over them was.

The Bulls Arena is sold out and no doubt crafty old coach, Giovanni Trapattoni, will have devised a plan to take a lead into the second leg.

Rangers should have too much class .....

.... for Norwegian strugglers Molde tonight.

Regular readers will know that I rate the Glasgow side pretty highly in the SPL, but hold coach Paul Le Guen and his vast european experience in even higher regard.

Providing they are fully motivated, they should run out easy winners. Former Gers defender Henning Berg, who is now in charge of Lyn, has helped with some information. His opinion is that the home side are poor, with just a couple of dangerous players, he feels that this is a great draw for the Scottish club and they should win both legs comfortably.

The Rangers players seem genuinely excited by the game and european football in general, striker Kris Boyd, is determined to improve on his amazing record of 25 goals in 26 games.

Just been told that PLG went to watch Molde in person at the weekend, that is a statement of intent and we should take the hint.

Molde have a very big match at the weekend, against Fredrikstad who are immediately above them in the league, surely they will have one eye on that game and certainly should give it a higher priority.

.... last Sunday, will know how unlucky we were, not to collect on our "over" bet.

There could/should have been 3 goals in the opening 14 minutes. The Hammers have always favoured an open, attacking style of football, have plenty of options upfront and at present, their defence looks a little suspect. From dead ball situations, Villa caused them plenty of problems.

Think we can try the "over"once more tonight and recover our losses when Palermo visit Upton Park. On the road, the visitors make West Ham look defensively minded, in 5 away UEFA cup ties last season, 4 had 3+ goals and the total of 59 goals in all away games last year, was the highest in Serie A. Having opened in a 7 goal thriller with Reggina at the weekend, we can surely goals tonight. I make the "over" a confident selection.

With no Ryder Cup concerns, he can give the tournament his full attention.

A few notes, Goosen claims to never play well here. To the best of my knowledge, Furyk has never set foot on the course before and Tim Clark is said to be carrying an injury.

I was tempted to try a little on Robert Karlsson to upset Furyk at a big looking 3.20, but have decided to hold off on the match bets for today. Will just take the outright selection for now.

MANCHESTER UNITED .....

.... were left feeling humiliated by their Champions League performance last season.

Bottom of their group, with only 3 goals scored, that is simply not good enough for a club of United's stature. Tonight they host Celtic, are hungry for a winning start and look to hold all the cards.

They won 3-0 at Celtic Park with a "b" squad, just 6-7 weeks ago, in a pre season friendly. Wayne Rooney returns, Ryan Giggs is in top form and they face an opponent with defensive problems.

The Scottish champions are short of options in central defence, Bobo Balde is still out and Caldwell, Naylor and McManus are all carrying knocks and face late tests. They will not gain much confidence from their recent CL group "road" trips, with just one point from 9 starts. That is as poor as it gets and doesn't even include the 5-0 drubbing at Artmedia, in qualification last season .

Sir Alex is a former Rangers player, has recently loaned two players to the Glasgow club, it is highly unlikely that he will take things easy tonight, even with Arsenal the visitors to Old Trafford at the weekend.

I watched highlights .........

.... of the Notts County-Accrington Stanley match at the weekend.

The 3-2 defeat flattered Stanley, 3 down after 36 minutes, the home side had several chances to extend the lead, two injury time goals gave the scoreline a respectable look.

The Lancashire club have yet to keep a clean sheet in the league and have conceded 3 in each of their last 2. The Accrington public have not really been inspired by Division 2 football and attendances have been disappointing.

Found two classic quotes on the main supporters forum, which show the extent of their ambition for this season......... "one place above the drop, is still the Champions League to us" and my particular favourite, "we need to be the best of the crap".

Tonight they host unbeaten Wrexham, who have had a difficult schedule and are the only side to have defeated Swindon. That win coming at the weekend, Sir Alex's son, Darren Ferguson returned to the side and played a key role, in a match where they "out shot" the league leaders 14-7.

Since beimg released from the shackles of administration, the club have really "kicked on" and there is a great feeling of optimism at the Racecourse Ground. Victory tonight, which boss Dennis Smith, has clearly targeted, would take them up to 6th place with a game in hand.

With a very nice run of winnable fixtures coming up and Cardiff and Swansea going so well, they will be keen to keep the Red Dragon flying high. I really do not see them losing tonight, so think the level ball quote is something to get stuck into.

HALIFAX TOWN .....

......... were to be, infact still are, my final selection of the day, but because the odds have fallen, I will reduce the stakes a little.

To be honest, this is more of a case of wanting to oppose Altrincham, who are in poor shape. They are without several players tonight and have lost 3 in a row conceding 11 goals.

Last season they lost 21 matches, a total only "beaten" by one team. They conceded 2 or more goals in 8 of their last 9 and collected only 5 points from a possible 39, in their last 13 starts. Defensively they are in a total mess.

Halifax did the double over Altrincham last year, they have a trip to one of the early front runners and strong home side, Weymouth, at the weekend and will be targeting three points tonight. I am backing them to be successful.
