VILLAREAL- VALENCIA

Plenty of support for the visitors here, in what is something of a local derby, their odds having tumbled in the last 24 hours.

Not going to get involved myself, certain that Valencia are the better team and that they will be challenging for a Champions League place come the end of the season. However, they have a poorish record here and any value in their odds, has now gone.

Would like to talk a little about Villareal though, they are without Pires and Nihat and the coach has decided to drop Juan Roman Riquelme. Reading between the lines, this can only mean that he is on his way, out of the club, during the transfer window.

The big news and something that you may have missed over the holiday period is that they have signed an exciting "replacement" in Matias Fernandez. The 20 yo attacking midfielder from Colo-Colo, was voted South American footballer of the year in 2006. He cost almost 9m euros and the Spanish club had to beat off some major competition to get his signature, including Chelsea and Real Madrid.

He probably favoured Villareal, as their coach, Manuel Pellegrini, is also a Chilean. He looks likely to start tonight, is a free kick specialist, scored 33 goals in 63 starts in Chile and will wear number 21, interesting for anyone who bets shirt numbers. Look out for "Matigol ".

No bet.

Back shortly.
