.... Na Li to progress at the US Open tonight.
The 24 yo Chinese girl recently entered the top 20 for the first time, this is a wonderful achievement considering she had atwo year break from tennis in her early twenties. No one is quite sure if this was due to injury, or because she was attending university, however, what we do know, is that upon her return, she won her first 26 matches !
Li has won some 35 tournaments on the ITF circuit, 19 singles and 16 doubles, not sure why she took so long to concentrate on the WTA tour, but has made huge progress this year. Highlight of which, was a narrow Wimbledon quarter final loss to Kim Clijsters, defeating Kuznetsova and Vaidisova en route.
Tonight she faces veteran Mary Pierce, who is playing just her second tournament in six months, after suffering foot and groin injuries. Feel that giving up 7 years to a tough opponent, after so little match practice, maybe asking too much of Pierce, certainly think the Chinese player is backable at 2.60.
