SOUTHERN PREMIER LEAGUE .....

I watched the Maidenhead United-Hitchin Town match on Saturday, played in the glamourous sounding, Southern Premier League, the truth is somewhat different, with the match played before 265 diehard fans. Well, 263 and me and my brother-in-law !

The hosts are in great form and have now won 8 in a row, they have a lot of potential at this level and if, as seems likely, they get into the play-offs, we can make a little money by following them, later in the post season.

The visitors, were very poor and never created one real chance in 90 minutes, the closest they came, was a kick from their goalkeeper, which almost sailed directly into the United net. The match was played in very windy conditions and Town were visibly tiring late in the game. Their only attacking threat came from their number 9 ( Cunnington ?), who took a heavy knock and was substituted.

It looks like they sold their better players in January and their form has since nosedived. They can claim just one win and 3 goals in 9 starts and have failed to score in 10 of 15, managing a single goal in each of the other 5.

They host Rugby Town tonight, who are not in the greatest of form either, but are showing clear signs of improvement and at least a little ambition from the board, who have added some experienced loan signings to the squad. Rugby created a host of chances in the weekend defeat to Banbury and were only denied by the woodwork and a fine goalkeeping display.

You have to believe the evidence of your own eyes and it can never be wrong to oppose a team that cannot score ! Several bookmakers take bets on this league and I am chancing a little on the visitors.

4 points Rugby Town 2.875 Skybet// 2.80 Stan James & Sporting Odds// 2.75 Corals & Paddy Power. Result won 2-1 + 7.5 points

Good Luck.
